For The Major Renovation project, I designed a contemporary extension for an existing residential home. The goal was to create an addition that not only increased the living space but also improved the spatial experience and overall architectural identity of the house. To determine the right atmosphere, I created a moodboard that guided the material palette and design style for the extension.

PROJECT OBJECTIVE

The objective was to design an extension that fits naturally with the existing house while introducing a modern and functional layout. I analyzed the current floorplan to understand circulation, light, and spatial needs, and developed a new configuration that integrates the extension seamlessly with the original structure.

APPROACH & PROCESS

I began by developing concept sketches and exploring different layout options on paper, combining the existing floorplan with the new extension. These drawings helped clarify the interior flow and the connection between the original house and the new addition. I then created a one‑point‑perspective interior drawing to visualize how the space would feel from inside the extension. After the sketching phase, I translated the design into digital form: the floorplans and elevations were produced in AutoCAD, and the full house—including the new extension—was modeled in SketchUp to study the volumes and overall exterior appearance.

CHALLENGES

One of the main challenges was designing an extension that felt natural behind to the existing house while still introducing a modern upgrade. Finding the right balance between new and old, maintaining good daylight, and keeping the floorplan logical required multiple layout studies and adjustments.

OUTCOME

The final design presents a clear and well‑integrated extension that strengthens the flow and functionality of the existing home. The moodboard, layout studies, perspective drawing, AutoCAD plans, and the SketchUp model together form a complete package that shows how the new volume connects naturally to the original house while adding a modern upgrade in space and light.

REFLECTION

This project helped me better understand how to merge new design elements with an existing structure. I learned how important it is to test different layouts and carefully balance daylight, circulation, and style. Working from moodboards to sketches and then to technical drawings improved my ability to guide a small‑scale renovation from concept to a coordinated design.
