The 1930s Houses project focused on designing a residential home inspired by traditional 1930s architecture while meeting specific project requirements. Throughout this project, I explored different design options by creating multiple sketches of floorplans and façades, each with unique layouts and stylistic features. After selecting the design that best matched the assignment, I developed it further through detailed drawings, including roof construction details. I also created complete floorplans, façades, and sections in AutoCAD, and built a SketchUp model with both interior and exterior renderings.

PROJECT OBJECTIVE

The objective was to create a fully developed 1930s-style house design that balanced functional layouts with characteristic architecture. This included producing sketches, floorplans, elevations, sections, and construction details, as well as a digital 3D model that accurately represented the final concept.

APPROACH & PROCESS

I began by sketching three different design variations, each exploring unique façade and floorplan configurations. After comparing them, I selected the strongest option and refined it further. The floorplans, sections, elevations, and detail drawings were developed in AutoCAD, while the 3D model was built in SketchUp and the interior/exterior renderings were created in Twinmotion. This combination of manual and digital tools allowed me to shape the concept from early sketches to a fully visualized design.

CHALLENGES

One of the main challenges was achieving the right balance between authentic 1930s architecture and modern functional requirements. Making sure the proportions, roof shape, and detailing felt true to the style required careful research and iteration. Another challenge was translating the hand‑drawn ideas into precise technical drawings without losing the original design intent.

OUTCOME

The final outcome was a fully developed 1930s house design, including detailed floorplans, elevations, sections, construction details, and a complete 3D SketchUp model with interior and exterior renderings. The project successfully combined traditional aesthetics with clear technical development.

REFLECTION

This project strengthened my ability to work within a historical architectural style while still designing efficiently and logically. Going from multiple concept sketches to one refined design helped me become more decisive in the early design phase. I also gained confidence in translating hand sketches into accurate CAD drawings and producing clear visualizations to support the final design.
